Our Way

The Nature Nursery Way exists to support early years settings to reconnect with what matters most: children, relationships, and the natural world.

We believe that nature is not an ‘extra’, an outdoor add-on, or a themed activity. It is a relationship, one that shapes how children feel, learn, and understand their place in the world. When nature is woven into the culture of a setting, not just its resources, children thrive emotionally, socially, and developmentally.

The Nature Nursery Way is not a programme to follow or a checklist to complete. It is a guiding framework that helps settings move with intention slowing down, noticing more, and working with nature rather than against it. It supports practitioners to build environments, rhythms, and practices that honour seasons, respect children’s natural curiosity, and prioritise emotional connection before curriculum.

Our guidance is designed to be accessible and inclusive. Whether a setting is just beginning to question plastic-heavy practice, or already deeply rooted in nature-based pedagogy, The Nature Nursery Way offers a supportive, reflective path forward. Every setting’s journey will look different, exactly as it should be.

We value presence, care, and learning to listen to children, to nature, and to ourselves.

What is it?

The Nature Nursery Way is not a themed curriculum, an activity bank, or a franchise model. It does not prescribe identical environments or uniform practice.

Instead, it offers a shared ethos and a guiding framework — one that supports settings to make thoughtful, values-led decisions rooted in their own place, people, and context.

The Nature Nursery Way comes to life through everyday choices: how time is held, how environments are shaped, how adults respond to emotion, how nature is welcomed indoors and outdoors, and how seasons guide rhythm and change.

These principles are explored in more depth through our guidance, tools, and shared learning opportunities.

What we hold true

We believe children need emotional safety before they can explore and that time is a form of care.

We believe nature is a relationship, not a resource.

We believe learning grows through curiosity, repetition, and connection and that adults shape culture through presence, not performance.

This way is not about getting it right.

It is about paying attention.

To children.

To nature.

To the rhythms already present.

Do you feel there must be another way. A way that feels calmer, more connected, and more sustainable for children and adults alike.

You do not need land, funding, or a particular starting point. This way is shaped by where you are now.
